Obituary for John A. Kluttz

John Augustus Kluttz, 88, of Black Mountain, NC, died Monday, November 27, 2017.
He was born on March 6, 1929, in Columbia, SC, to Glenn Roswell Kluttz and Jessie Lee Earhardt Kluttz.
John is survived by his children Cathy Kluttz-Hile, Nancy K. Hudson and her husband Richard, John E. Kluttz and his wife Leslie, and Jimmy Kluttz and his wife Libby. Other surviving family members include his grandchildren: Barrett Kluttz and his wife Stephanie, Mary Beth Hudson and her fiancé Derrick Garrou, Margaret H. Cameron and her husband Corey, Martha Hudson and her wife Victoria Bunch, Emily Kluttz, and Grace Kluttz; and great-grandchildren: Olivia Kluttz, Dylan Kluttz, Hayden Kluttz, Alexa Kluttz, Avery Cameron, and Tucker Cameron.
John was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 63 years Glenna Byrd Kluttz, his parents, and sister Mary Jane Kluttz Sullivan.
John moved to Black Mountain with his wife Glenna in the late 1950s and became a pillar of the community most affectionately known as “Big John.” An honors graduate of Newberry College and The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Pharmacy, John was the owner of Knight’s Pharmacy on State Street for 30 years. John was committed to a life of service that extended throughout the town and county including, among other endeavors, time spent as town alderman, chairman of the board of Black Mountain Savings Bank (25 years), and president of the Buncombe County Pharmacy Association. He was also a faithful member of Black Mountain United Methodist Church. Most at home outdoors or in his garden, John devoted his life to his family, who knew him best as John or Dad, and in later years Dada. John leaves behind a legacy of love, dedication, and laughter to many family and friends.
A service in memoriam will be held at Black Mountain United Methodist Church on Monday, December 4, 2017; family members will receive guests at 1:00 p.m. in the sanctuary followed by the service beginning at 2:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, a donation in John’s honor may be made to Black Mountain United Methodist Church or a charity of one’s choosing.
