“Where you go, I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God will be my God.” Not only did Ruth say those words, but Muriel Miller did that too with Robert Miller. She traveled from the coast to the mountains. Little did she know that the eight siblings of Robert Miller had many nieces and nephews with whom she would teach, counsel, and love. I was one of the more needy ones. She never was too busy to talk with me, listen to me, and love me. Even after I was away many years, I often would steal away a day or two to come to the mountains just to talk with her. We both loved to read and discussed our books as well as many other topics. One Fall I was going through a difficult time, so I stole away for a weekend and visited Muriel. It was cool and we sat by the fireplace and talked. Our visit was food for my soul. She never condemned, although she had a very strict code of ethics. She never said my thoughts were foolish although she gave good advice. My middle daughter, Anita Joy, loved her the most of my children. Anita is 4’11”. She was so happy to find an adult the same height and with whom she could look straight in the face without looking up. Muriel may have been 4’11” but she had great stature to me. I’ll miss her sweet voice on the phone and her beautiful smile when I visited the mountains. “Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all. Charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.” (Proverbs) Muriel Miller, you are praised!

Wake for M.M. It was you who taught me About the spelling of mourning doves And the message behind it. Not a time of day, But the long season after death Still pungent with memory. I saw two of them On the fence this morning Through the snow, Their tucked gray-pink Plumage like the skin of your hands Sprinkling flour on a biscuit pan. They brought no message. And when I looked again They had vanished over the fields.

Granny, Aka Nubbin, because she towered over the earth at a striking 4’11”. She let my family of 6 (at the time) live in her house while we remodeled a barn up the hill that we moved into and I was raised in. I spent almost every day in her house at some point, or at least on her porch. She was kind, and feisty, and generous in a way that made you feel silly if you ever thanked her too much. You were family?!? Of course, she was going to feed you, and house you, and give you her tiny glass bottle cokes every time you walked down the hill to see her. Last night she decided she was ready to go see Jesus. I’m so happy for her -but being left behind sure stings about now. So, glad I got to see her just a few short days ago. And that she met two of my three babies this side of heaven. Love my Granny.

My sweet Granny passed away Sunday. At 4’10.5” she was small in stature, but a large presence in our lives. Growing up, my family lived next door and we would watch out the window and wait until she signaled (by opening her blinds) that she was ready for visitors. My sisters, brother and I would descend upon her house and when we exploded through her door she would always welcome us with, “Hey children.” I can’t remember a single time I entered her house that I didn’t feel welcome. She’d offer the kids candy, mini Coca Colas in glass bottles, and the Disney channel and the adults coffee and warm conversation around the kitchen table. She was generous and spunky, loved her kids, grandkids, and great grandkids, and even though I know she was ready to be with Jesus, I think we all wish she could have just stayed here with us forever. I love you my Granny.

Granny by Jenny My sweet Granny passed away last night and I'm missing her something fierce. When I was in 4th, 5th and 6th grades she would invite me to spend the weekend with her every once and a while. We'd get bean burritos at Taco Bell, hit up the movie store, check out 5 books each at the library and settle in to her little home. Reading in front of the fire sometimes we wouldn't speak for hours, except to look at each other and wink. I was delirious- someone who loved being quiet and reading JUST as much as me. We'd discuss book plots and watch Sherlock Holmes (our favorite BBC show) and stay up until 3 am. It was glorious. She made me feel so much less lonely in the world. She was a working woman in the 1950's (read independent) and she inspired me with the way she lived authentically, even when she was swimming upstream. The last time I talked to her on the phone we talked about what we'd been reading, even as she struggled with finding words. "I'll send you some book titles to get on your kindle" I said, and I just bought her a birthday card yesterday. "Hug your babies for me" she said. "I love you Granny." I replied.

Aunt Muriel was a kind and loving person. She cherished her family and friends and we are all fortunate to have been a part of her life.
