Obituary for Sammy Stewart

Sammy Stewart
Sammy Stewart, 63, of Hendersonville, went home to be with the Lord and his two children, Colin and Alicia, on March 2, 2018.
Originally from Swannanoa, Sammy was born October 28, 1954 to the late Samuel Stewart, Sr. and Mary Faye Stewart.
Sammy graduated from Charles D. Owen High School in 1973. He signed with the Baltimore Orioles on June 15, 1975 and played in the Majors for 10 years. Sammy set a Major League world record with the Baltimore Orioles that is still held today. He played in two World Series with the Baltimore Orioles and one World Series with the Boston Red Sox. Baseball was Sammy’s passion, and he used it to mentor and coach youth.
Other loves of Sammy include hunting, fishing, cooking and music. It could be said of him that Sammy was always the life of the party.
Sammy was a member of Living Water Church in Hendersonville. He was a larger than life character who couldn’t go a day without a smile. He never met a stranger.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his children, Colin Stewart and Alicia Stewart Allen.
Sammy is survived by his wife, Cherie Stewart; sons, Ryan Stewart and Christian Stewart; sisters, Linda Banks (Mike) and Judy Terra; former wife, Peggy Stewart; niece and nephews, Julie Eskander, Mike Banks, Brian Banks, and Jonathan Woods; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins; and his dog, Rhett. He is also survived by a community that loved him dearly, including coaches, teammates, and the Baltimore Orioles Alumni Association.
A Celebration of Sammy’s Life will be Friday, March 16, 2018 at 6:00 pm in the Chapel of Harwood Home for Funerals with Pastor Tony Birkhead officiating.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 4600 Park Road, Suite 100, Charlotte, NC 28209.
