Obituary for Georgia Robinson (Chapman) Sams

On May 11, 1933, a Madison County midwife delivered Maud and Tom Robinson’s first daughter. They named her Georgia for her paternal grandmother. She had two older brothers, Lee and Floyd. Over the next seven years, she was blessed with three sisters, Lois (Grant), Grace (Frizsell), and Evelyn (Frizsell).
Except for a short time spent in Caldwell County, her family spent the first 14 years of her life in Madison County. In 1946, they moved to Swannanoa, where Georgia lived for most of the rest of her life. She attended Black Mountain High School.
After high school, she went to work at William Crabb Company, where she met Cliff Chapman, whom she married in 1952. She became step-mother to Saundra (Blevins), as well as a wife. The little family lived in Patton Cove. They welcomed their first daughter, Angela (Skinner), while living there.
Georgia and Cliff built a home on Jim’s Branch Road and moved in just before their second daughter, Jo Ann (von der Muehll) was born. She had two more children while living on Jim’s Branch, the baby girl, Katie (Russell) and her only son, Phillip. She often said that she was happiest during this time of her life.
Georgia was a fun-loving and energetic person, who sewed most of the clothing she and her girls wore and some for her husband and son. She had a garden every summer and canned food from it for the winter. She took her children to church every Sunday. All this while working full time at Cutler-Hammer for several years, and later working for and retiring from Kearfott.
Her sewing passion in later years was quilting. She made quilts for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In retirement, Georgia worked part-time at Bi-Lo. She also volunteered and made food for the Welcome Table at Swannanoa United Methodist Church and Dogwood Manor Nursing home. As she neared 80, her health began to fail. She moved to Venice, Florida for two years to be with her daughter. Like the Energizer Bunny she kept going. She volunteered for the prayer shawl ministry of Christ United Methodist Church, crocheting and looming shawls. She read voraciously and did word search puzzles.
She adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In the last months of her life, their visits gave her pleasure. As they entered her room at Fleshers Healthcare, her face would brighten with a smile and warmth reserved for her babies.
After her diagnosis of pancreatic cancer, she chose to live her life with, “quality, not quantity.” Treatment side effects for her frail body were not acceptable to her. She was determined to enjoy the time she had left in the world. She enjoyed regular visits from her sisters and niece, and her baby girl, Katie and husband, James.
She was a member of Christian Creek Church until 1981. Later she joined Tabernacle United Methodist Church where she was a member until she died.
We will miss this dynamic little lady. “We love you. See you in the twinkling of an eye, Mama.”
