Obituary for Joan McCracken Greer

Joan McCracken Greer
Joan McCracken Greer, 92, wife of the late Robert H. Greer, passed away May 25, 2018. Born in Canton, NC she was the first child of Carrol McCracken and Artie Wood. She was preceded in death by her two younger brothers, Carrol and Max.
An enthusiastic member of the greatest generation, she faced many challenges at a young age. Both her parents died before she was 18. She attended girls boarding school and graduated from Fassifern High School in Hendersonville. She attended UNC at Chapel Hill and married Bob Greer, her college sweetheart and a WWII veteran, in 1947. In 1950, the birth of her only child, interrupted her education and she left school 2 courses short of her degree. Bob and Joan moved to Asheville in 1954 and she proudly called it home the rest of her life. Joan represented Sherwin-Williams over 30 years and was a trusted adviser to her customers concerning coordination of colors and fabric. After a tragic automobile accident left Bob paralyzed, she dutifully cared for him daily for 20 years until his passing in 2001.
Joan is survived by her only child, Robert Greer Jr, his wife, Kimberly Herlong-Greer; their children, Leslie McKinney and Harrison Greer; and Leslie’s son, Aiden McKinney. Her late brother Carrol’s wife, June McCracken has been a comfort and blessing over the years.
A brief service will be held at the Western Carolina State VA Cemetery at 10:00 AM, June 1, 2018.
