Alvarati Estelle Taylor Patton (Avie), 89, of Black Mountain, N. C. passed from her earthly body October 2, 2018 around 6am after a slow decline with dementia.
She was born in Black Mountain on February 8, 1929, coming full circle to live in the same location of her birth until her passing. She was the seventh child of Freeman and Mollie Dotson Taylor who preceded her in death. She graduated from Black Mountain High School in 1947 and studied further at Cecil’s Business School. After moving to Charlotte, she worked for Dept. of Commerce, Federal Census Bureau for 23 years before retirement.
She was married for 49 years to James Benjamin Patton, Jr. who preceded her in death in 2000.
Avie had a passion for service, and some of her most treasured activities were related to her work with the Midwood Baptist Church in Charlotte and First Baptist Church in Black Mountain. A devout Christian, she served as a Deacon and designed and lovingly created the church banners displayed throughout the year in both churches. She took pride in serving and helping international students in need in her community. She especially loved gardening, music and her family.
She was a devoted mother to two children, Lori Lane Patton of Black Mountain and Keith James Patton and daughter-in-law, Betty Ann Burke Patton of Charlotte who survive. The joys of her life, her three grandchildren, Lauren Haley, Taylor Elizabeth (Liz) and Benjamin Burke Patton were always a focus of her love and devotion.
A memorial service will be held to celebrate her wonderful spirit and life at 3pm Sunday, October 7, at First Baptist Church of Black Mountain, NC with visitation to follow the service.
Donations in her memory may be made to First Baptist Church, 130 Montreat Road, Black Mountain, NC 28711 designated to Sanctuary Fund.
