William “Marvin” Hamilton, 93, died Wednesday, October 31, 2018 in Black Mountain, NC after a brief illness.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 64 years, Erlene Greenlee Hamilton, in 2011. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Roy Lee Hamilton, John Hamilton, and grandsons, Paul Jason Hamilton and William Rashaan Hamilton.
A native of McDowell County, he was the son of the late Leroy and Georgia West Hamilton. He ultimately became a resident of Buncombe County for over 72 years.
Mr. Hamilton was a member of Mills Chapel Baptist Church for 70 years where he served in many church capacities, including Deacon, Sunday School superintendent and teacher, treasurer, trustee, Layman’s League member, and budget and finance committee officer.
He worked for Beacon Manufacturing Company and the Charles Owens Company for 41 years, retiring in 1989. In his last management position, he lead the company’s conversion from manual procedures to electronic data management for supplies procurement and inventories.
In the community, Mr. Hamilton had an active life-style. After retiring, he served as an Alderman in the town of Black Mountain, a member of the Black Mountain Planning Board, a volunteer and Chaplain at the Asheville-Buncombe County Christian Ministry for 28 years, and president of the Willing Workers Club for Oak Grove Cemetery. He was also well known for his daily walk from his home on Cragmont Road to Lake Tomahawk, frequent fishing trips to area lakes, and friendly golf outings with his son and neighbors. He enjoyed gardening and cooking for his family and friends. In the early years, he was the key organizer and coach of the neighborhood’s only little league baseball team.
He is survived by his son, William Edward Hamilton (Jennifer) of Indio, CA; grandson, Aaron Hamilton of Indo, CA; granddaughter, Lauren Hamilton of Los Angeles, CA; brother, Oran Hamilton of Black Mountain, and numerous family including brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held at 2:30pm, Thursday, November 8, 2018 at Mills Chapel Baptist Church in Black Mountain, NC with Pastor Bobby Hill presiding. The family will also be receiving friends at Mills Chapel Baptist church from 1:00 to 2:00pm prior to the service.
Memorial donations may be made to the Mills Chapel Baptist Church Scholarship Fund, 328 Cragmont Rd., Black Mountain, NC 28711.
