Obituary for Major Arthur "Art" Franklin Holman Jr.

Major Arthur “Art” Franklin Holman, Jr, USMC-retired, 79, of Black Mountain, NC died on December 6, 2018 after a brief illness.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, December 12 at Black Mountain Presbyterian Church, 117 Montreat Rd. BMPC pastor Mary Katherine Robinson will be officiating. A brief reception in the church fellowship hall will follow.
Art was born at Sunset Dairy in Leaksville, NC (now Eden, NC) on July 26, 1939. He graduated from Tri City high school and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, where he did two tours of service in Vietnam, received the Bronze Star, among other commendations, and rose to the rank of Major prior to his retirement from active duty in 1977.
He returned to college and earned a B.A. in Anthropology with a minor in Fine Art from the University of Southeastern Louisiana. He worked in the oil fields of Louisiana, and then for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Even after he became what he called “seriously retired,” he kept up his voracious appetite for reading and learning. He knew how to tie a fly; set up a zip line; restore a bamboo rod; dance to gamelan music in Bali; write poems, stories, and plays; repair bicycles as a gift to international students; cook a feast; find a thrift store treasure; attend a peace march; create a painting.
Art is survived by Katherine, his wife of 56 years, his son Bud and daughter-in-law Tammy , daughter Shannon Holman and her partner Erica Harris, grandchildren Dustin and Kate, sisters Billie Lopushinsky and Marie Anderson, and the many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends that he loved so much.
Art is preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Geneva Holman; his sister Kate Holman, his brothers-in-law Bill Lopushinsky, Mac Anderson, and Jimmy Hopkins, and his daughter Jan Holman.
Memorial donations may be given to Habitat for Humanity in care of Black Mountain Presbyterian Church.
