Obituary for Frank Watkins

Frank Watkins, 92, a lifelong resident of Black Mountain, NC, passed away Saturday, June 20, at Highland Farms Retirement Community, where he had resided since 1996. Born in Black Mountain on January 16, 1923, he served in the US Navy as a pilot, when he met and married his wife of 49 years, Dot (Moffitt) Watkins, who died in 1994.
Frank was employed at the VA Hospital in Oteen, NC, for 35 years before retiring at the young age of 56. He continued to remain busy at his home on Pine Street, in Black Mountain, which he proudly built, serving as his own general contractor in 1960, and continued to live there until moving to Highland Farms following Dot’s death. Frank and Dot spent much of time on their small farm in Old Fort, NC, next to Dot’s family’s home. Frank was active for many years in the First Baptist Church, Black Mountain, serving as Sunday School teacher, Deacon, Building Committee, BTU Superintendent, as well as many other areas.
Frank is survived by son, Ron Watkins (Carol) of Memphis, TN; daughter, Carol Stanford of Asheville and Lake Hartwell, SC; grandchildren, Shelley Parks (Arick) of Memphis, Brooke Phillips (Josh) of Anderson, SC; Adam Stanford (Lindsay) of Fairview, NC; Koren Martin (Jimbo) of Covington, TN; Scott Ellis (Kimberly) of Seattle, WA; 15 great-grandchildren; and 3 great great grandchildren, with one on the way.
The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00PM Wednesday evening, June 24, at Harwood Home for Funerals, 208 W. State Street in Black Mountain.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the charity of your choice.
The family would like to extend sincere thanks to the staff at Highland Farms Retirement for making Frank’s many years there a family-friendly, supportive environment.
