Obituary for Wendell Ray "Wen" McCaslin

Wendell Ray McCaslin, “Wen”, 77, entered into eternal peace on Saturday, September 30, 2017, at the Charles George VA Medical Center in Asheville, North Carolina.
Wendell was born on August 22, 1940, a son of the late John Dewey and Elsie Ikerd McCaslin. He graduated from Maiden High School in 1958 and served in the U.S. Air Force 1958-1962.
Following his service, Wendell worked as a long-distance truck driver and then became a self-employed building contractor, starting McCaslin Construction Company.
He was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church in Maiden, NC, and also attended Christ Church in Conover, NC. He was a charter member of the Startown Optimist Club and a member of the American Legion.
Wendell is survived by his children: Angela McCaslin Zecca and husband Kenneth of Woodbridge, VA; Eric Anthony McCaslin of Maiden, NC; and Alison Emily Hunter and husband Stephen of Fredericksburg, VA; grandsons Seth Allan Hunter, 11, and Logan Joshua Hunter, 9, of Fredericksburg, VA.
Wendell is predeceased by his parents and brothers John D. McCaslin, Jr., O’Neill McCaslin, Richard McCaslin, and Keith McCaslin.
He is also survived by brothers Joe McCaslin and wife Velma of Houston, TX; Jack McCaslin and wife Linda of Raleigh, NC; and Blair McCaslin and wife Barbara of Chapin, SC; and sisters Christine Cowan of Maiden, NC, and Carolyn Schronce of Maiden, NC; and various nephews and nieces.
Viewing and services will be held Thursday, October 5, 2017, at 12:30pm at the Harwood Home for Funerals at 208 W. State St, Black Mountain, NC 28711. Military burial will follow at Western Carolina Veterans State Cemetery at 962 Old US Hwy 70, Black Mountain, NC 28711.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Charles George VA Medical Center Community Living Center and Valor Hospice in Asheville, NC.
