Condolence: I still remember Sammy, my 9 year old cousin at the time, yelling to me, "the President was shot", over & over, that day, as I walked home from high school to my house across the street. It's one of my many memories of Sammy. Watching him play just about every sport with his Dad, my Uncle Sam, is another. Football & baseball seemed to be his favorites. Uncle Sam probably caught thousands of balls pitched to him by Sammy. Years later, we were in Hollywood, Florida, & realized Sammy had been called to spring training in Miami with Baltimore. So we drove down to see him. He was so happy & totally humble to be in such a great position. When he was put in to play his first game & made a record of 7 strikeouts in a row; we were were so excited for him. As time went on, I didn't see him but probably 2 or 3 more times. During that time he endured a lot of pain & loss. A time when he lost himself. Recently he seemed to have put all his demons behind him. He was without question, very talented in sports & loved sharing his talent with young hopefuls. I'm sure they will never forget him. But then, none of us who knew him, will ever forget either. Thinking of you today with love, Linda & Judy. Kay & Jim

Condolence: Peggy, Sammy was one among several from our very special Swannanoa Valley who got to go out into the world and do something very special. His talent, his big smile, his nack of never having met a stranger will allow very special memories to linger with us all for a long time to come. Thinking of you very specially during this time and in the days the months to come. Hugs, Cindy

Condolence: Family and Friends, Our world has lost another great bigger than life figure. Sammy was loved by all who knew him. He's been my friend since I was his assistant coach in little league baseball. He used to say that I was his first real pitching coach, probably just to make me feel good. In his teens he was also coached by Gob Martin, Cecil Caldwell, and Ronnie Craig; and he never forgot any of them. He was always mannerly, generous, kind, considerate, and loved bringing happiness to others. He genuinely loved so many people, and let them know it too. The last time I saw him was at the Sourwood Festival in Black Mtn. when he came up on a Sat. nite to hear my group play; he always loved bluesy rock. He hugged my neck and told me he loved me before he left. I loved him too, and I'll miss him; but I expect we'll see him again pretty soon in God's Great Family Reunion. God bless you all. G.C.

Condolence: I was sorry to hear of Sammy's passing. He was about the same age as myself. I was a Reynolds baseball, football and basketball fan. I saw Sammy play all of them and he was the best "all around" high school sports player that I have ever seen. He could play all sports. Like everyone, he had his problems, but he had a good heart and attitude. Rest in peace Sammy.

Condolence: Gail and I are so sorry to hear about Sammy. Sending our thoughts and prayers to the Family. I first met Sammy in 1966 at a PP&K event held at Owen HS. Although he was a year older, we were in the same grade through school. I always knew if you could 'throw it', 'catch it', 'hit it' or 'kick it', you could bet Sammy played it. An All-Sports Phenomenon. Even though we were Tri-Captains for football in our senior HS year, everyone knew his true-passion was baseball. Loved to watch him come in as an 'early-reliever' with the O's. He took the time to speak to my 'late' parents when they attended an Orioles game he was pitching. Memories last forever. Rest In Peace Sammy. With deepest sympathy, Gail and Steve Coston
